By Coordinator/Public Information Officer William Smith
July 2, 2019

On July 26th U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen took the time to stop into Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department #3 to visit with the volunteer fire/EMS leadership and volunteer members from around Charles County. He listened very intensely as Chief Ben Jenkins and Attorney Sue Greer offered a brief overview of the operation and history of his department. Questions were asked about retention incentives for volunteers, increase in Length of Service Awards Program benefits, and federal grant opportunities. The Senator was asked what he could do to help at the local level to enhance volunteer opportunities here in Charles County. Waldorf Volunteer President Tom Edwards explained in brief the budget distribution process and it's "short comings". State Senator Arthur Ellis and State Delegate Debra Davis were in attendance and pledged their support to the volunteers in Charles County as well. Chief Jenkins took the delegation for a station tour and photo opportunities where Senator Van Hollen said he would come back to Charles County at anytime. The follow volunteer county leaders were in attendance:

County Fire Chief Kaufmann
County EMS Chief Spalding
Special Operations Chief Mills
Waldorf Volunteer Chief Ben Jenkins
Waldorf Volunteer Assistant Chief John Durrer
EMS Association President Yates
Fire Executive Chair Edwards
Mr. Jack Conlon, Vice Chair, Board of Fire Rescue

Special Thanks to Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department for the hospitality and La Plata Volunteers for attending this meeting
