Special Operations Marine Division Answers the Call for Assistance
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

By Coordinator/Public Information Officer William Smith
January 22, 2025

At 4:45 PM, volunteer Fire/EMS members braved the bitter freezing temperatures of the Potomac River. A caller stated they see a boat on the river near Pomonkey Creek and can not confirm if people are on the boat. Command was established, Chief 11A (Delozier) and Chief 8A (Danielson) developed a plan to send AIR BOAT #8 into the frozen water. Air Boat #8 with 3 volunteers launched to the area where the "stranded" vessel was reported, they confirmed "no souls onboard". Boat #4 reported to Mallows Bay and was standing by in case assistance was needed. RE11 was able to meet with a resident along Fenwick Road who indicated the vessel was in the water since Sunday. After further investigation the owner of the 30' vessel stated the anchor broke and he was waiting for the water to unfreeze to move the vessel to shore. DNR, Fairfax, and PGFD Air Boat #47 assisted in the incident. Units operated for approximately two hours before returning to service. No injuries were reported.

This time of year the waterways are extremely dangerous for the public as well as the volunteer Fire/EMS personnel. Our team from our Special Operations Marine Division are "the best of the best", risking their lives and equipment for those who call. Thank you All for your commitment and sacrifices each and everyday.
